How the Montessori Method Is Used to Treat Alzheimer’s Disease

By James R. Buscemi, 9:00 am on

Italian educator Maria Montessori developed the Montessori method of teaching, which modifies the learning process to take into consideration a student’s unique cognitive needs. Activities and lessons are based on the many aspects of each individual, which includes their aesthetic, cognitive, emotional, physical, social and spiritual characteristics. In this way the individual is challenged without becoming frustrated. The unique approach has also been adapted to help Alzheimer’s caregivers in North Broward boost their loved one’s cognitive wellbeing.

Modifications for Seniors

Many North Broward dementia home care providers and long-term care facilities use a modified version of the Montessori method in ways that help older adults living with varying degrees of memory loss caused by cognitive diseases or injuries. The seniors are encouraged to participate in activities that build on their existing abilities, memories and skills. Tasks are broken down into smaller steps in order to ensure success. Improvements in an individual’s abilities rely on activities that are repetitious and stimulate all five senses. Each task that is successfully completed is also rewarded with positive reinforcement.

Montessori Activities

Caregivers develop activities that relate to a senior’s former hobbies, interests, lifestyle or occupation. Each task is designed to improve mental and/or physical function. The activities can be performed singly or as a group effort. The types of tasks that can be created are virtually endless. Some examples of beneficial activities include:

  • Putting together puzzles
  • Identifying lettered blocks
  • Reading material that has larger text
  • Sewing cards
  • A large piece of material that has buttons, buckles, hooks and zippers
  • Matching colors, shapes or images
  • Wood-based activity board that features dials, levers, knobs and locks

Modified games that require rolling balls or tossing objects help improve upper body strength and movement. Trivia games often stimulate memories and mental function. Group activities also encourage conversation, which boosts overall social skills. All of the activities help build confidence and self-esteem, which enable participants to enjoy a better quality of life.
