How You Should Stock Your Senior Loved One’s Holistic First Aid Kit

By , 9:00 am on

Live-in North Broward caregivers should prepare a holistic first aid kit that their senior loved one can use for various injuries or ailments. Make sure to put instructions with each item so that the senior knows how and when to use each item. Over time, add additional items to the kit as the senior learns to rely on natural methods to treat minor ailments.

Activated Charcoal

The amazing power of activated charcoal to trap toxins in its tiny pores makes it very useful in a holistic first aid kit. Some North Broward senior home care professionals believe that taking about 500 milligrams ahead of a meal helps to prevent gas and the bloated feeling accompanying it. If the senior accidentally poisons him or herself, then it can also be used to remove toxins from the body. Additionally, pouring water through activated charcoal makes it safe to drink.

Cayenne Powder

Stopping a headache or migraine can be as simple as eating a little cayenne powder. When ingested, it can also stop blood from clotting. Pouring some cayenne powder onto a cut can make it stop bleeding. It is also a great way to stop aching joints from hurting.

When the senior has a fever, make a poultice with chamomile and watch the temperature drop back to normal. The poultice is also useful in stopping pinkeye. Make a warm cup of tea with it to help the senior relax and drift off to sleep. You can even pour a little into a warm bath to help relieve sore muscles.

Peppermint Oil

The senior is likely to find that breathing in the fumes of peppermint oil helps to stop dizziness and clears head congestion. Help the senior rub some on tight and sore muscles to help them relax. Apply two or three drops to each wrist to keep insects from biting at outdoor events. Stop itchy spots on the senior’s skin by applying a little peppermint oil.

Baking Soda

While the senior might already have baking soda in his or her cupboard, put some in the holistic first aid kit. Have the senior drink a little combined with some water to stop indigestion. If the senior gets a splinter, soak the splinter in a bowl of warm water and baking soda. This will help the splinter fall out easily. You can also put a cup or so in the bathtub to stop the pain of sunburn.
